Apropos a news story entitled “Record tampering: FIA to bring back SECP commissioner through Interpol” published in Daily Times on July 28, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has explained that there is no commissioner in the SECP with the name of Tariq Mehmood.
“However, Mr Tahir Mahmood handles the portfolios mentioned in the news item,” the commission’s spokesman said on Friday.
“It was alleged that an SECP commissioner Tariq Mehmood, after giving his witness statements in forgery case of Chaudhry Sugar Mills, had fled the country… However, Mr Tahir Mahmood is in Pakistan and regularly attending his office at the SECP,” the spokesman said.
He added that Tahir, along with other SECP officials, appeared before Senate Standing Committee for Finance and Revenue on July 27 to brief the “honorable members of the committee on the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. Surprisingly, the news about the meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue has also appeared in Daily Times.”
The spokesman said that contrary to the accusation made in the news item, Maheen Fatima and Ali Azeem never stated that they made any changes in the record on the instruction of Tahir Mahmood. “SECP Commissioner Tahir Mahmood has no connection with the alleged tampering and the same he explained before the honorable members of Senate Standing Committee for Finance and Revenue on July 27, 2017.”
